Silver ETFs also attracted ₹1,270.63 crore during the month. Together, gold and silver ETFs saw inflows of around ₹3,867 crore in August.
Overall, ETFs attracted ₹10,160.87 crore during the month. Equity ETFs accounted for ₹7,237.49 crore, while debt ETFs recorded ₹944.97 crore of outflows.
The increase in gold ETF flows came alongside a rise in assets under management (AUM). Gold ETF AUM increased 10.3% month-on-month in August, according to Mayank Sharma, Director & Head – Asset Allocation and Products at Client Associates.
However, Sharma cautioned that the rise in gold ETF AUM reflects price momentum as well as fresh buying. Therefore, the increase in AUM should not be interpreted entirely as fresh investor allocation.
Suranjana Borthakhur, Head of Distribution & Strategic Alliances at Mirae Asset Investment Managers (India), said that after the sharp rally in gold and silver earlier this year, buying in these ETFs appears to be becoming more allocation-driven rather than momentum-led.
She said continued global uncertainty also makes a steady commodity allocation relevant from a portfolio-diversification perspective.
Saugata Chatterjee, President and Deputy CEO at Nippon India Mutual Fund, said sustained investor interest in Gold ETFs, along with consistent flows into multi-asset allocation funds, reflects a growing preference for diversification and balanced portfolio allocation amid global uncertainty.
Rohit Sarin, Co-Founder of Client Associates, also said the renewed appetite for precious-metal ETFs suggests investors are not only looking for growth but are also considering diversification amid global uncertainty.
The stronger flows into precious-metal ETFs came as equity mutual funds continued to attract investor interest. Equity-oriented schemes received around ₹29,329 crore in net inflows in August, while SIP contributions reached a record ₹32,297 crore.
The August data therefore showed continued demand across equity and precious-metal investment products, although the rise in gold ETF AUM needs to be viewed separately from net inflows as changes in gold prices can also affect the value of assets held by these funds.
