Banks to remain open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of 3-day strike: FinMin


Banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30, the Ministry of Finance said on Wednesday (September 23).

The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and coincides with the preceding weekend holidays on September 26 and 27. The government has taken steps to ensure that banking needs of citizens are not adversely affected over an extended period.

All Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026, the Ministry of Finance said.

The Reserve Bank of India has granted approval for all bank branches, offices, ATM-link branches and Currency Chests to remain fully operational on September 27.

The decision has been taken to ensure that the banking needs of the public are not adversely affected by the proposed three-day strike and the preceding weekend holidays.

The Ministry of Finance said the government has taken proactive steps to safeguard the banking needs of citizens in view of the proposed nationwide strike.

The government and bank managements have also appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike, according to the ministry.

The ministry said measures have been taken to ensure that essential banking services continue uninterrupted.

The proposed strike by the UFBU is scheduled to take place from September 28 to September 30, 2026. It follows the weekend holidays on September 26 and 27.

As part of the measures taken ahead of the strike, Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will remain operational on Sunday, September 27.

The RBI approval covers all bank branches and offices, as well as ATM-link branches and Currency Chests, allowing them to remain fully operational on September 27.

The Ministry of Finance said the welfare and convenience of bank customers remains the government’s foremost priority.

The ministry reiterated that the measures were aimed at ensuring that customers continue to have access to essential banking services during the period involving the weekend holidays and the proposed three-day strike.

The government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the proposed strike while taking measures to ensure that essential banking services continue uninterrupted.

The proposed nationwide strike is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 28, and continue through September 30.

With September 26 and 27 falling immediately before the proposed strike, the government said it has taken steps to prevent banking needs of citizens from being adversely affected for an extended period.

Accordingly, Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will function normally on Sunday, September 27, while the RBI has approved the continued operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-link branches and Currency Chests on the day.
