The company said the new cables come in sizes carrying between 48 and 6,912 individual optical fibres. STL said the range is aimed at large data centres which are seeing a sharp rise in the volume of data they need to move. The cable ends already come fitted with connectors from the factory, so engineers can plug them in on site rather than fitting connectors by hand.
The range covers two product lines. One, carrying between 48 and 576 fibres, is for connections within a single data hall. STL said it meets ANSI/ICEA S-83-596 and UL cable safety standards, with the cables themselves 5.8 mm to 12.2 mm thick depending on fibre count.
The second line, carrying between 144 and 6,912 fibres, is built for longer links between buildings or across a campus. STL said even its largest version in this range, carrying 6,912 fibres, has an outer diameter of only 32 mm. This line is also built to withstand outdoor conditions, including prolonged sun exposure.
Both lines are available with a choice of connector types and configurations, and in either single-mode or, for indoor use, multimode fibre, to suit different equipment. STL said every cable is tested before leaving the factory, with higher-performance connector options available for customers who want lower signal loss. The company also said the cables use a patented technology that colour-codes the fibres to make them easier to identify and splice together during installation.
The stock of the company ended 5% lower in the session on Thursday. The shares have grown eightfold in the year so far.
