BALASORE: A nearly 300-year-old two-storey building in Damodarpur in Ward No 12 of Balasore Municipality., partially collapsed around 7.35pm on Sunday, following continuous heavy rainfall that weakened the aging, unmaintained structure.The ancient building is locally believed to be the place where renowned Odia litterateur and writer Fakir Mohan Senapati stayed and studied during his early years, and it has been occupied by generations of the family of Bachu Keshab Rao, with people still residing in one portion of the structure.Part of the dilapidated structure caved in suddenly, sending heavy debris crashing onto the street below and blocking the local road, though no injuries or casualties were reported.A woman nearby had a miraculous narrow escape, with the entire close-call incident captured on CCTV.The incident has drawn attention because of the building’s age and its reported historical connection with Fakir Mohan Senapati.
