US Markets | US stocks were largely flat on Tuesday as investors monitored movements in Treasury yields. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped about 50 points, or 0.1%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite hovered around the unchanged mark.
US Consumer Confidence | The Conference Board consumer confidence index fell 6.7 points to 81.9 in September, while economists polled by Dow Jones expected an increase to 89 from 88.6 in August. “Consumer appraisals of current business conditions became negative for the first time since September 2024. Perceptions of the current labour market also worsened, though remained within positive territory. Over the next six months, consumers expected both business conditions and the labour market to weaken. Consumers still anticipated their household incomes to rise, but less so compared to previous months,” said Dana Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board.

Hires edged up. The so-called quits rate, which measures the percentage of people voluntarily leaving their jobs each month, held at 1.9% — matching the lowest since 2020.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was up 2 basis points at 5.264%, while the 30-year Treasury yield was flat at 5.589%. The moves came as investors monitored the bond market.
