FII selling intensifies to nearly ₹10,000 crore as Nifty heads for worst September in 25 years


Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) stepped up selling in Indian equities on Tuesday, offloading shares worth ₹9,980.22 crore on a provisional basis, according to exchange data.

FIIs bought equities worth ₹22,472.70 crore during the session but sold shares worth ₹32,452.92 crore, resulting in net selling of ₹9,980.22 crore.

The selling was significantly higher than Monday, when FIIs were net sellers to the tune of ₹5,353.22 crore. FIIs had bought shares worth ₹9,047.56 crore and sold equities worth ₹14,400.78 crore on Monday.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, continued to provide support to the market, recording net purchases of ₹6,952.71 crore on Tuesday.

DIIs bought equities worth ₹46,261.11 crore and sold shares worth ₹39,308.40 crore during the session. On Monday, they had recorded net buying of ₹5,189.02 crore.

Overall, FIIs and DIIs together were net sellers of ₹3,027.51 crore on Tuesday.

Nifty heads for worst September in 25 years

The heightened FII selling came as benchmark indices ended lower on Tuesday, although they recovered sharply from the day’s lows.

The Sensex fell 243 points to close at 72,529, while the Nifty declined 64 points to 22,716.

The Nifty is now down nearly 7% in the September series, putting it on course for its worst September series in 25 years.

The Nifty Bank fell 212 points to 54,260 but ended nearly 500 points above its day’s low. The Nifty Midcap index declined 595 points to 59,319.

Market breadth remained weak, with the advance-decline ratio at 2:3. Nearly 30 Nifty stocks ended lower, with some stocks falling as much as 3%.

IT, insurance stocks among laggards

The Nifty IT index fell more than 1%, with Wipro emerging as the biggest loser among the index constituents.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories was the top Nifty gainer after a brokerage upgraded its rating on the stock by two notches.

Insurance stocks also extended their recent losses. PB Fintech fell 6%, while TurtleMint declined 5%.

BSE, meanwhile, surged in the final hour of trade, gaining 3% ahead of its inclusion in the Nifty.
