The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has dismissed social media claims that existing Cheque Truncation System (CTS) cheque books will become invalid after December 31, 2026, clarifying that it is not introducing any new cheque book requirements from January 1, 2027.
In a clarification issued on November 7, the central bank said messages circulating on social media claiming that new cheque books with updated security features would become mandatory from the beginning of next year were factually incorrect and misleading.
“It is clarified that at present Reserve Bank of India is not introducing any such measures with regard to the CTS cheque books,” the RBI said in a post on X.
The central bank also urged members of the public to rely only on information published through its official channels regarding regulatory changes.
What is the Cheque Truncation System (CTS)?
The Cheque Truncation System is an electronic process through which banks clear cheques using digital images and associated data instead of physically moving the paper cheque from one bank to another.
The system helps reduce the time taken for cheque clearance and improves the efficiency of the banking process.
The RBI’s latest clarification means there is no newly announced requirement for customers to replace their existing CTS cheque books from January 1, 2027.
Customers have been advised to avoid forwarding unverified messages and check the RBI’s official announcements for updates on banking rules.
