The Major Case Squad helped investigators swiftly solve Wilson’s seemingly random highway shooting.

A drive that should have ended with Halloween festivities instead became the beginning of a homicide investigation spanning multiple states. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Wilson was on her way to a Halloween event in Missouri when a bullet struck her car on a highway, killing her and cutting short a future filled with plans. Within days, investigators arrested a Texas man accused of the shooting and uncovered evidence that could connect him to another highway shooting reported earlier that month.

A Halloween journey turns fatal

According to a report by The Guardian, on October 14, Wilson was driving her Buick Encore along Interstate 170 near Overland, Missouri, on her way to Boo at the Zoo, a Halloween event at the St Louis Zoo.The Fox2Now report adds that prosecutors allege a single shot was fired into the rear of her vehicle, striking Wilson in the back and leaving her unable to control the car. The vehicle subsequently crashed into a concrete highway median. She was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The suspected shooter, 43-year-old Willie James Herndon of Arlington, Texas, reportedly had no known relationship with Wilson, adds The Guardian report.Herndon faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges in St Louis County. His wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, has also been charged with hindering prosecution, according to Fox2Now.

Investigators examine an earlier shooting

The investigation took a wider turn when authorities revisited a separate shooting reported on October 11 along Interstate 55 near Bates Avenue in St Louis.According to Fox2Now, a 37-year-old motorist told police that a white SUV had pulled over near the highway shortly after 4:30 a.m. When the driver went around the vehicle, a bullet struck the rear of the motorist’s car. Nobody was injured.A shell casing was recovered at the scene. Investigators are conducting laboratory and ballistic examinations to establish whether the weapon used in that incident was the same rifle allegedly used in Wilson’s killing, The Guardian and Fox2Now reported.Surveillance footage and vehicle-tracking evidence have helped investigators trace a white SUV believed to be associated with Herndon across the two incidents and subsequent locations, adds the online report.

Hotel arrest yields weapons and notes

The search for the suspects led authorities to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois, on October 16. According to The Guardian, investigators approached Taiya Herndon outside the hotel room before Willie Herndon emerged and attempted to flee. He was subsequently arrested.A search of the room reportedly uncovered a rifle in plain view, ammunition matching the type associated with Wilson’s shooting, two licence plates and handwritten notes detailing police vehicles and other vehicles Herndon allegedly believed were following him. Investigators also found a petrol station receipt linked to an area near the scene of Wilson’s death.Federal prosecutors in Illinois have charged Willie Herndon with being a felon in possession of a firearm, The Guardian reported. His prior convictions include nonviolent felony offences in California, according to Fox2Now.

A wider investigation into highway shootings

Authorities are examining whether the two incidents could be connected to other unsolved cases involving apparently random attacks on motorists. Fox2Now reported that investigators have drawn comparisons with the 2024 interstate shooting death of Collin Brown, another case involving a victim with no known connection to the suspected shooter.Investigators are also reviewing the couple’s movements across Texas, Arkansas and Missouri using licence plate reader data. Establishing a connection between the shootings could help law enforcement agencies identify similar cases elsewhere. The investigation has moved quickly despite the apparent randomness of Wilson’s killing, with Fox2Now reporting that the Major Case Squad played a significant role in solving the homicide. For Wilson’s family, however, the investigation cannot undo the loss of a teenager who had been looking forward to turning 18 and taking her first family vacation to Disney.
