KOLKATA: A joint team of Kolkata Police and Paschim Medinipur Police, accompanied by central security forces, conducted an overnight search operation at the Kalighat residence of Trinamool Congress national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, triggering a major political controversy in West Bengal, an official said on Saturday.According to police sources, officers arrived at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence and called out to the occupants.When there was no response, the team allegedly broke open locks to enter the premises and carried out a search that continued for several hours.Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also rushed to the spot after learning about the operation.Police officials said the search was linked to a case registered at Salboni police station in Paschim Medinipur district. Investigators claimed they were looking for an aide of Banerjee wanted in a land related case at Salboni.The operation stretched for more than four hours, with police teams remaining inside the residence through the night and into the morning. The presence of central forces alongside the police during the operation added to the political heat surrounding the incident, with the development drawing sharp attention across the state.
