AI shopping with Grok: Musk’s credit card-sharing idea sparks privacy debate

Using an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to shop online could involve more than comparing prices and selecting products. Elon Musk’s suggestion to use Grok for purchases by uploading a photograph of a credit card has triggered questions about the safety of sharing sensitive payment information with AI tools, with users raising concerns on social media.

In a post on X, Musk said users could upload a picture of their credit card to a chat with Grok Bot, which would search the internet for the best deal on a product and place an order.

The suggestion points to a possible use of AI agents in online shopping, where a chatbot moves beyond recommending products to completing transactions.

However, it also raises questions about how payment details shared with such systems are processed, stored and protected.

The post drew reactions from users concerned about the risks of sharing credit card information with an AI chatbot. Some questioned whether uploading a photograph of a card was a safe way to enable AI-led purchases, while others suggested alternatives such as virtual or single-use card numbers to limit exposure of primary card details.

A context note attached to Musk’s post also highlighted concerns about sharing personal information with AI systems and referred to data-handling and access risks.

Why payment security matters

A credit card photograph can expose sensitive payment information. Sharing it with an AI service raises questions about what information the system retains, who may be able to access it and what safeguards apply when purchases are made on the user’s behalf.

The concerns extend beyond the security of a chatbot conversation. An AI tool that places orders may need access to payment information and other details required to complete a transaction.

Users would need clarity on how a service obtains authorisation before making a payment, whether transaction limits can be set and how purchases can be reviewed or stopped. The handling of payment details and the procedures for resolving unauthorised transactions are also relevant considerations.

Musk has also shared an example of using Grok to research Lego Star Wars kits suitable for young children and place an order, illustrating the chatbot’s potential role in product discovery and purchasing.

AI-assisted shopping could simplify product searches and price comparisons. However, the convenience of delegating purchases to a chatbot needs to be weighed against the safeguards available for personal and financial information.

Musk’s suggestion does not, by itself, establish how Grok would handle credit card photographs in every case or what protections would apply to a completed purchase. Users should check the service’s current privacy terms and payment procedures before sharing financial details.
