MUMBAI: Sahar police are investigating the alleged theft of US $2,120 from an Air India cabin crew member’s bag, possibly aboard a New York-Mumbai flight or after it landed at Mumbai airport on September 21.Police registered a case against an unidentified person on September 30 after S Sana, 24, found the money missing when she reached her Mira Road home after duty.She and her husband examined CCTV footage from the airport area but found nothing suspicious.Sana asked police to question her colleague Mavers, whom she suspected of stealing the money. Police summoned Mavers, but no arrest had been made until Friday, an officer said.Sana was assigned duty on Air India flights between Mumbai and New York from September 14 to 21 with 14 other crew members. They arrived in New York on September 17 and had a three-day layover.In her complaint, Sana said she withdrew US $1,000 from a New York City ATM on September 18 while sightseeing with five colleagues and another US $1,000 on September 19.The crew left New York for Mumbai aboard Air India flight AI 116 on September 20. Sana claimed she had placed the money in her hand luggage, which was kept in a compartment reserved for crew members. She discovered the alleged theft after checking her luggage at home on September 21.The case comes after Mumbai Crime Branch last month took over investigations into 27 thefts from passengers’ bags registered by Sahar and Airport police stations between Jan 2025 and September 3, 2026.Police said 22 cases were registered at Sahar police station and five at Airport police station between Jan 1, 2025 and Sept 5. No stolen property, comprising Rs 43.2 lakh in cash and gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 67 lakh, has been recovered.
