American Express to change SmartEarn card benefits and EMI rules from October 11

Amex to end Reward Multiplier programme in India from September 30; what cardholders need to know

American Express will change several benefits and features of its SmartEarn Credit Card from October 11, 2026, as it upgrades the technology supporting its card and account services.

The changes will introduce a new online account experience across the American Express mobile app and website, while also altering how customers manage Membership Rewards, convert transactions into EMIs, use supplementary cards and make payments.

Under the new system, card benefits and offers will be grouped under a new Memberships tab on the Amex mobile app. Cardholders will also be able to access their benefits through their online accounts on the Amex website.

Customers will have more options to manage their cards digitally, including redeeming Membership Rewards points through the mobile app and transferring points to partner airlines and hotels. They will also be able to update their email address, phone number and address, manage domestic, overseas and online transaction settings in real time, and freeze, unfreeze or replace a card.

Cardholders will also be able to raise disputes and request refunds of credit balances through new digital service options on the app and website.

EMI conversion rules to change

American Express will introduce a new digital EMI facility that will allow eligible cardholders to convert up to 10 individual transactions into EMIs directly from the transaction view. The limit is currently six transactions.

The conversion will be completed automatically and immediately, without requiring customers to submit a separate form, the company said.

However, customers will no longer be able to request EMI conversions through SMS or convert outstanding card balances into EMIs.

The way customers redeem Membership Rewards points for statement credits will also change. Instead of selecting individual transactions, cardholders will be able to use their points against their outstanding card balance in one go.

Rewards rules largely unchanged

American Express said annual spending milestone benefits will continue. Eligible spending will be determined by the date transactions are posted to the card, while related vouchers will be issued at the end of the calendar month in which the milestone is reached.

The Membership Rewards earn rate and redemption options will remain unchanged.

Customers holding two or more basic American Express cards, however, will have their points maintained separately for each card. Points earned through supplementary card transactions will continue to be pooled with those earned on the associated basic card.

Customers with overdue payments will face restrictions on earning and redeeming Membership Rewards.

If an amount remains unpaid when the next statement is generated, cardholders will not earn points on transactions made from that statement date and will not be able to redeem existing points during the period. Both earning and redemption will resume once the outstanding amount is paid.

Supplementary cards, late fees to change

American Express will temporarily stop accepting new applications for supplementary cards from September 22, 2026.

Customers planning to apply for one have been advised to submit their applications before September 22 and complete the process by September 30.

The company will also change how eligible refunds and reversals are treated when calculating payments due. Refunds and reversals received by the payment due date will be adjusted against both the Minimum Amount Due and Total Amount Due, including those received after the statement has been generated.

The late payment fee will be calculated using the Total Amount Due instead of the Minimum Amount Due. The applicable fee slabs will range from ₹500 to ₹1,250.

American Express will also revise its interest calculation methodology and related examples in its Most Important Terms and Conditions, with the changes taking effect from October 11, 2026.
