American Express to discontinue two card features in India from September, October

American Express is set to discontinue two features available to its cardholders in India, according to an email sent to customers.

The ‘Check Your Spending Power’ feature will be discontinued from September 16, while the Emergency Card Replacement service will be withdrawn from October 8.

The changes will affect how cardholders can check the likelihood of a transaction being approved and how quickly they can receive a replacement card in certain emergency situations.

‘Check Your Spending Power’ to end from September 16

The Check Your Spending Power feature currently allows American Express cardholders to check whether a planned purchase is likely to be approved through their online account.

The feature will no longer be available from September 16.

The company clarified that the change will not affect the way card transactions are authorised. Cardholders can continue to use their cards as usual.

There is no action required from customers as a result of the change.

Emergency card replacement service to end from October 8

American Express will also discontinue its Emergency Card Replacement service from October 8.

The service currently provides expedited delivery of a replacement card when an eligible replacement is required.

After the change, cardholders will continue to have access to the standard card replacement service. American Express currently estimates the standard replacement timeline at 7–10 business days.

The company has advised customers to continue reporting lost or stolen cards promptly so that the card can be secured and a replacement arranged. It has also asked customers to keep the standard replacement timeline in mind, particularly when travelling.

Comes amid a series of Amex card benefit changes

The latest changes follow a series of revisions to American Express card features in India.

The company is also set to discontinue its Reward Multiplier programme from September 30, 2026. The six-year-old programme allowed eligible cardholders to earn additional Membership Rewards points on purchases through participating brands and bookings.

American Express is separately changing the milestone rewards and domestic airport lounge access on its Platinum Travel Credit Card.

From September 10, the 7,500 Membership Rewards points linked to ₹1.9 lakh of annual spending will be discontinued, while the ₹4 lakh milestone offering 10,000 points will remain.

At the ₹7 lakh spending milestone, the existing 22,500 additional Membership Rewards points will be replaced by a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-Gift Card, up from the existing ₹10,000 voucher.

From October 1, complimentary domestic airport lounge access will also become spend-linked. Cardholders will need to spend at least ₹1 lakh in the preceding calendar quarter to qualify for up to two complimentary domestic lounge visits in the following quarter.
