Messi, who captained Argentina to glory in Qatar four years ago, remains the centrepiece of Scaloni’s plans despite recent concerns over a minor hamstring issue. The 38-year-old missed a friendly against Honduras but returned against Iceland, scoring after coming on as a substitute.
“Everybody wants to see him on the pitch, because he has an effect not only on Argentina fans but supporters all over the world,” Scaloni said.
Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi echoed his coach’s sentiments, calling Messi “the best player in history” and praising the veteran’s competitive spirit.
“He is a simple person who focuses on training. He is also a competitive animal,” Otamendi said.
Messi fever has already swept through Kansas City, where supporters gathered in bars and fan zones hoping to catch a glimpse of the Argentine legend. Fans sporting his famous No. 10 jersey have filled the streets, with many aware that this could be the final World Cup appearance of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Messi is expected to make his 200th appearance for Argentina against Algeria. He also has the opportunity to join Pele in an exclusive club if Argentina successfully defend their title. Only Italy in the 1930s and Brazil in 1962 have won consecutive World Cups.
Argentina will also face Austria and Jordan in Group J as they pursue a fourth world title and further cement Messi’s remarkable legacy.
