Axis Gold Fund, Axis Silver Fund of Fund get new quantity-based SIP option

Axis Mutual Fund has introduced a new digital feature that allows investors to build exposure to gold and silver by setting a target quantity in grams, instead of committing to a fixed rupee amount through a conventional SIP.

The feature, called Shagun SIP, is available for the fund house’s Axis Gold Fund and Axis Silver Fund of Fund. It allows investors to choose the quantity of gold or silver they want to accumulate and the period over which they want to do so.

SIP amount can change with metal prices

A conventional mutual fund SIP involves investing a fixed amount at regular intervals. Under Axis MF’s new feature, the investment amount can vary because the target is defined in terms of the quantity of the metal.

For example, an investor looking to accumulate 5 kg of gold over 10 years can set the quantity and investment period. The system then calculates the periodic investment required based on prevailing prices.

This means the rupee amount invested may rise when gold prices increase and fall when prices decline, while the objective remains to accumulate the targeted quantity over the chosen period.

Gold and silver through mutual funds

The feature does not involve buying and storing physical gold or silver. The investments are made through Axis MF’s existing gold and silver fund structures.

The underlying schemes invest in gold and silver of 99.5% and 99.9% purity, respectively, according to the fund house.

The stated accumulation limits under the feature are 25 kg for gold and 50 kg for silver.

A different approach to precious metal investing

The development gives investors another way to structure systematic exposure to precious metals. Instead of deciding on a fixed amount to invest every month, investors can start with a quantity they want to accumulate and work backwards to determine the investment required.

The approach also spreads purchases across different price levels. However, the actual rupee amount required can change as gold and silver prices move.

The feature is available digitally through the Axis Mutual Fund website.
