Bitcoin recovers from last week’s lows, reclaims $82,500: Key drivers

Bitcoin reclaimed the $82,500 level on Monday, October 19, as the cryptocurrency market rebounded from last week’s lows. Gains across several major altcoins also pointed to a broader recovery, although weak institutional investment flows and uncertainty over the US Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook continued to weigh on sentiment.

Bitcoin was trading around $82,400-$82,500, gaining close to 1% over 24 hours, according to market data shared by industry participants.

The cryptocurrency had slipped below $80,000 last week before recovering, with investors assessing the implications of higher US inflation and the possibility of tighter monetary policy.

Minal Thukral, executive vice-president and crypto business head at CoinDCX, said Bitcoin’s recovery above $82,500 had supported gains across the altcoin market.

Ether was trading around $2,420, while Solana was near $105.23 and XRP around $1.30, according to CoinDCX’s market update. However, gains were uneven across smaller tokens, with some recording declines despite the broader market recovery.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index, which tracks sentiment in the cryptocurrency market, had recovered to 50, indicating neutral sentiment. This suggests that investors have yet to develop a clear bullish or bearish bias.

US inflation and institutional flows remain in focus

The recovery comes against a cautious global market backdrop. US inflation rose to 3.7% in September, according to figures cited by market participants, keeping monetary policy in focus ahead of the Federal Reserve’s October 27-28 meeting.

Higher interest rates can weigh on risk-sensitive assets such as cryptocurrencies by making interest-bearing investments more attractive.

Institutional investment flows have also remained weak. US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net outflows of about $228 million between October 12 and 16, according to Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus.com.

Ether ETFs saw outflows of around $320 million over the same period, according to Delta Exchange’s market commentary.

These withdrawals suggest that the recent price rebound has yet to coincide with a sustained return of investment through these funds.

Nischal Shetty, founder of WazirX, said Bitcoin had shown resilience despite weakness in US equities, while Ether’s relatively weaker performance over the past week highlighted the uneven nature of the recovery.

Avinash Shekhar, co-founder and CEO of Pi42, said Bitcoin’s ability to sustain levels above $80,000 reflected buying interest at key price points. He added that sustained demand and broader participation across major cryptocurrencies would make the recovery more convincing.

What should crypto investors watch?

Bitcoin’s ability to hold above $80,000 will remain an important level to watch after last week’s decline. Investors will also monitor whether institutional fund flows improve and whether the recovery extends across the wider cryptocurrency market.

Riya Sehgal, research analyst at Delta Exchange, said Bitcoin had rebounded towards $82,000-$82,500 but continued to face resistance at higher levels. She added that inflation concerns, interest-rate expectations and weakness in global markets remained important factors for crypto prices.

For investors, the latest rebound does not by itself confirm a sustained recovery. Cryptocurrency prices remain volatile and could react to changes in US monetary policy expectations, institutional investment flows and broader market sentiment.
