Cognizant’s latest quarterly results delivered a mixed message for investors. While the US-based IT services major reported better-than-expected revenue and earnings growth, management turned slightly cautious by trimming the upper end of its full-year growth guidance due to weak discretionary spending in key sectors.

The results, however, provide important clues not just for Cognizant shareholders, but also for investors tracking Indian IT heavyweights such as TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro and Tech Mahindra.

Cognizant Q3 Results

The company reported revenue of USD 5.66 billion, up 4.6 per cent year-on-year and 4.8 per cent in constant currency. GAAP operating margin stood at 15.4 per cent, down 60 basis points year-on-year, while adjusted operating margin came in at 16.3 per cent, up 30 basis points year-on-year.

GAAP diluted EPS was USD 1.39, up 148 per cent year-on-year, while adjusted diluted EPS rose 7.2 per cent year-on-year to USD 1.49. Net income stood at USD 627 million, more than doubling from a year earlier. Trailing 12-month bookings were USD 28.7 billion, up 4 per cent year-on-year, while free cash flow was USD 925 million, down about 20 per cent year-on-year.

Cognizant Outlook

Cognizant’s near-term outlook remains challenging, with the company narrowing its CY2026 revenue growth guidance to 4 per cent-4.4 per cent in constant currency from 4-5.5 per cent earlier.

According to Nuvama, weak macroeconomic conditions, tariff-led uncertainty, the Gulf war and the impact of Gen AI could continue to drive volatility. Weak discretionary spending in the healthcare and consumer sectors has also weighed on the company’s growth outlook. For Q4 CY2026, Cognizant expects revenue to decline 2-3 per cent sequentially, with adjusted EBIT margin guidance at around 16.1 per cent.

However, stable bookings and margin improvement offer some support. Q3 revenue grew 4.8 per cent year-on-year in constant currency, while adjusted EBIT margin rose 30 basis points year-on-year to 16.3 per cent. Bookings increased 4.4 per cent year-on-year to USD 28.7 billion, with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.3x and three large deals.

Over the longer term, Nomura remains positive on Cognizant, maintaining its Buy rating and raising its target price to USD 76 from USD 75. The brokerage expects spending to recover in 2027 if macroeconomic conditions stabilise. Meanwhile, AI engagements increased to around 8,500 in Q3 from 8,000 in Q2, providing another key development to monitor.
