Delhi court rejects Umar Khalid's bail plea to care for ailing mother

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday rejected activist Umar Khalid’s bail plea to care for ailing mother. The court rejected the plea on the grounds that the reasons cited by him for temporary release were not “reasonable”, ANI reported.Additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai was hearing Khalid’s plea seeking 15 days’ interim bail to attend his uncle’s Chehlum, the 40-day post-death ritual, and to care for his mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery. This comes a day after Supreme Court expressed “serious reservations” on the court’s verdict denying bail to Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, saying it didn’t follow a larger bench judgment, which is “law of the land”. IT said as per that bail should be granted in cases of long incarceration and delay in trial, even under UAPA and PMLA.Khalid and several others were charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly orchestrating the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, which claimed 53 lives and left over 700 injured. The violence broke out amid large-scale protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).
