Dolly Parton’s former California cottage near Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch is on the market.

Dolly Parton’s former California getaway is giving fans a rare opportunity to own a piece of the late country music icon’s history. Her quaint cottage in Solvang, California, is currently on the market for $1.995 million, offering buyers a three-unit property that still retains several personal touches associated with the singer. The property, which Parton owned from 2004 to 2014, includes the restored cottage at the front and two detached accessory dwellings. According to the latest report, the home has attracted serious interest from potential buyers in the UK, France, Australia and across the US following Parton’s death.

Located in the foothills of Solvang, the property dates back to 1920 and served as a private weekend retreat for Parton. The cottage features a distinctive stained-glass window above the front door displaying her name alongside a butterfly.Parton reportedly used the property primarily when travelling with her longtime childhood friend Judy Ogle. Speaking to the New York Post, co-owner Chris Lapp recalled that the caretaker had specific instructions whenever Parton was expected: the cottage was to have plenty of fresh flowers and a refrigerator stocked with Spam, one of the singer’s favourite foods. The property also has a plaque on its white picket fence identifying it as the former home of Parton, singer, actress and American icon.

The main cottage measures around 1,100 square feet across two floors and has retained a warm farmhouse character, with hand-carved woodwork, lattice detailing, paintings and hand-knit pillows. One of its most unusual features is Parton’s former wig room, which remains inside a converted 12-by-13-foot garage. The dressing room also reflects the singer’s famously glamorous aesthetic, with pink and red tones, lipstick-inspired touches and plenty of sparkle. Lapp told the publication that some of these details are covered when prospective buyers visit the property. The cottage is part of a roughly 2,500-square-foot compound containing three separate homes, with a total of seven bedrooms and six bathrooms.

Despite its charming appearance, the property was designed with considerable security in mind.According to the report, Parton had installed an industrial-grade steel door for her bedroom that was so heavy it reportedly took three people to remove. The replacement door is wooden, but the frame remains reinforced. The property’s windows were also blacked out to prevent people outside from seeing in, a feature Lapp described as “pap proofing.”Outside, the property features a miniature windmill and wooden tulips inspired by Solvang’s Danish character. There is also a small birdhouse modeled after a traditional chapel and a dog run installed during Parton’s ownership.

The property was listed for $1.995 million, and interest has reportedly increased significantly since news of Parton’s death.Lapp told the publication that serious inquiries have arrived from several countries and from different parts of the US. A firm offer was also made but was rejected after the prospective buyer submitted what Lapp considered a lowball bid.The asking price has remained unchanged, while prospective buyers are now required to provide proof of funds before arranging a viewing, partly to prevent people from visiting simply out of curiosity about Parton’s former home.

Owner hopes a Parton fan gets the property

Lapp, who owns the property through Black Oak Land and Capital, has expressed hope that the next owner will appreciate its connection to Parton. He has even indicated that he would consider reducing the price slightly if the City of Solvang wanted to purchase the property and preserve it as a destination for fans. However, Solvang Mayor David Brown ruled out the possibility, pointing to the city’s decision not to purchase Michael Jackson’s nearby Neverland property after his death.“We will all always love Dolly. It doesn’t take a physical property for that,” Brown told the New York Post.

Dolly Parton’s California real estate legacy

The Solvang cottage was one of several California properties associated with Parton. She also owned a home in Idyllwild, while her wider real estate portfolio included properties in Tennessee, West Hollywood and New York. The amount Parton originally paid for the Solvang property has not been publicly established. Property records show that the previous owner purchased it for $185,000 in 1999.Lapp purchased the compound for $1.3 million in 2022 and spent roughly $100,000 renovating the three homes into rental properties. He said he only discovered the property’s connection to Parton late in the purchase process, when the title was being searched during escrow.
