NEW DELHI: As the first phase of BJP’s ‘save democracy, remove anarchy’ campaign winds down, its functionaries are encouraged by what they believe to be substantial support to their defence of SIR and appeared to be moving to seek to convert what appeared to be a challenge into an opportunity. The confidence was reflected in Union home minister Amit Shah’s fresh dare to Congress on Tuesday to debate the issue in Parliament. “We are ready to convene a special session to hold discussions on SIR. If you (opposition) have the courage, come and engage in a discussion before people of this country. Simply carrying around a copy of the Constitution does not amount to supporting it. One’s conduct must be constitutional,” he added.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi, the face of opposition’s campaign against EC and govt, Shah alleged Congress once supported ‘Janatana Sarkar’ run by Maoists and he has now himself made a mockery of Parliament by staging ‘fake’ parliament proceedings.

BJP functionaries are of the view that the ongoing mobilisation, especially through marches headed by its national and state faces, around its combative counter to INDIA bloc’s campaign has helped it amplify its stand and effectively challenge the narrative pushed by Congress and its allies and promote their own – that opposition’s protests have been devised to mask Congress’s successive electoral failures and to ensure, in keeping with opposition’s politics of “appeasement”and “vote bank” that the “infiltrators” remained on electoral rolls.BJP is set to continue with its campaign when its second phase begins after Diwali festivities. The party has also drawn comfort from a survey commissioned by it in eight cities that shows a big approval of 72% for SIR, with the big majority saying that it needed to be ensured that only Indian citizens vote.
