Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said testing for the UPI-based withdrawal facility has been completed, with the service expected to launch after final implementation and system integration.
When could EPFO withdrawals via UPI start?
While the government has not announced an official launch date, the minister said testing of the facility is complete, indicating that rollout could happen in the coming months once operational clearances and software integration are finalised.
EPFO has been working to resolve backend software issues before introducing the system for its more than seven crore subscribers.
How may EPF withdrawal through UPI work?
Under the proposed mechanism, EPFO members are expected to:
- View the eligible PF balance available for withdrawal
- Transfer the amount directly into their seeded bank account
- Authenticate the transaction using their linked UPI PIN
Once the money reaches the bank account, subscribers may use it like regular funds for digital payments, transfers or ATM withdrawals.
The labour ministry has also indicated that a portion of EPF savings may remain frozen, while a larger accessible component could be made available for digital withdrawal.
What changes for EPFO members?
At present, EPFO subscribers must file withdrawal claims to access PF money. Although auto-settlement has reduced processing time for eligible claims, members still need to go through the formal application process.
The proposed UPI integration could make access faster and more direct, especially for emergency or short-term financial needs.
Currently, EPFO’s auto-settlement system processes eligible claims electronically within three days without manual intervention. The limit under this mechanism has already been raised to ₹5 lakh from ₹1 lakh for purposes such as illness, education, marriage and housing.
What else is EPFO planning?
The EPFO is also preparing to launch WhatsApp-based member services, likely within a month, according to the minister.
Subscribers may be able to use the platform to:
- Check PF balance
- View last five transactions
- Track claim status
- Receive support for Aadhaar authentication and DBT-related issues
The service is expected to support regional languages and operate round the clock through automated responses.
