EPL block deal: Blackstone-backed Epsilon Bidco sells 26.4% stake, Quant MF among buyers


The spate of block deals on Dalal Street continued on Tuesday, with shares of EPL declining as much as 9.5% after a large transaction in the speciality packaging company.

Blackstone-backed Epsilon Bidco Pte sold 8.45 crore shares, or 26.4% of EPL’s equity, for ₹2,032.33 crore on the NSE. The shares were sold at an average price of ₹240.57 apiece, according to block-deal data.

On the other side of the transaction, Quant Mutual Fund bought 1.4 crore shares, or 4.5% stake, for ₹345.07 crore. The Public Sector Pension Investment Board picked up 35.40 lakh shares, or 1.1% stake, for ₹85 crore, while the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority bought 27.49 lakh shares, or 0.86% stake, for around ₹66 crore.

Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance and Bandhan Mutual Fund also bought shares worth around ₹50 crore each.

The transaction follows CNBC-TV18’s report on Monday that Epsilon Bidco was looking to sell up to 26.4% equity, or 8.45 crore shares, in EPL through a block deal. Sources had indicated an offer price of ₹235 per share, implying a transaction value of around ₹1,985 crore.

At the end of the June quarter, Epsilon Bidco Pte Ltd held a 26.38% stake in EPL, while public shareholders owned 73.62%, according to exchange data.

The block deal comes shortly after EPL MD and Global CEO Hemant Bakshi told CNBC-TV18 that the company had raised its near-term revenue growth guidance from low double digits to high teens following the June quarter, when revenue grew 25%.

Bakshi had also said the company successfully passed on additional costs arising from the West Asia crisis and expected to maintain its underlying EBITDA margin at around 20%.

Shares of EPL were trading 9.1% lower at ₹238.10 on Tuesday. The fall has trimmed the stock’s year-to-date gain to around 10%.
