Xi rejects ‘might makes right’ at Brics summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping used the Brics summit in New Delhi to call for stronger Global South cooperation and a rules-based international order. Xi rejected the “might makes right” approach and advocated sovereign equality, noninterference and peaceful settlement of disputes. He also proposed deeper Brics cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital industries, trade, intelligent manufacturing and science and technology. Modi, Xi offer ‘good offices’ on Ukraine
Russia said PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping offered their “good offices” to Russian President Vladimir Putin to help resolve the Ukraine conflict during their separate discussions with him on the sidelines of the Brics summit. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin welcomed their readiness to assist. PM Modi and Putin also discussed strengthening India-Russia economic ties, including the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030, as well as infrastructure, energy, technology, defence and culture. Anthropic CEO flags AI’s catastrophic risks
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that the risks posed by increasingly powerful AI systems cannot be captured through a single probability. Responding to concerns raised by former Anthropic researchers, Amodei said different development pathways could produce very different outcomes, with the wrong trajectory potentially increasing the risk of catastrophic harm. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said the party would be “extra cautious” while selecting future Rajya Sabha nominees following a series of defections. Java Sea tragedy leaves 130 missing
A major search-and-rescue operation continued in Indonesia after passenger vessel Virgo Transport 8 overturned and sank in the Java Sea amid rough weather. The vessel was carrying 243 people, including 213 passengers and 30 crew, when contact was lost early Sunday. Authorities said 107 people had been rescued and six bodies recovered, leaving around 130 people missing. The ship had been travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, with the captain reportedly warning of waves reaching up to three metres before the vessel began listing.Read full story
