Democrat James Talarico has pulled off a historic victory in Texas, defeating Republican Ken Paxton to end nearly four decades of Republican dominance in the state’s US Senate elections and deliver a major blow to President Donald Trump. The 37-year-old state legislator’s victory marks the first time a Democrat has won a Texas Senate election since 1988, when Lloyd Bentsen secured his final re-election to the chamber. The result is a stunning breakthrough for Democrats in a state Trump carried by double digits just two years ago. Talarico’s win also marks a rejection of Trump’s decision to back Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn during a bitter Republican primary, despite warnings from party leaders that the former attorney general’s baggage could put the seat at risk.

Talarico, a former middle school teacher and Presbyterian seminary student, built his campaign around an economic populist message, focusing on the rising cost of living, political corruption and the influence of wealthy donors. Rather than leaning heavily into partisan attacks or divisive culture-war issues, he sought to appeal to independent and disillusioned Republican voters. His central argument was that the country’s biggest divide was not between the political left and right, but between the wealthy and ordinary Americans. He repeatedly accused billionaires of using their money to shape politics while arguing that powerful interests had left working families struggling with rising prices.Paxton’s record provided another opening. The Republican had spent years weathering legal and personal controversies, including a federal corruption investigation, allegations of abusing his office to benefit a political donor and a securities fraud indictment. Although he was acquitted following an impeachment trial in the Texas Senate and federal prosecutors ultimately brought no charges in the corruption investigation, the controversies remained a central feature of the campaign.Trump had backed Paxton despite concerns among Senate Republicans that his nomination could jeopardise an otherwise winnable seat. The president repeatedly urged voters to treat the midterm elections as a referendum on his leadership, only to distance himself from the results as the losses mounted.“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” Trump wrote on social media on Tuesday night.Talarico’s victory was part of a wider Democratic breakthrough in Texas, where Gina Hinojosa also defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott to become the state’s first Democratic governor since Ann Richards left office in 1995. Hinojosa’s victory further underlined the scale of the political shift in a state long considered a Republican stronghold.A former public school teacher, Talarico first entered the Texas House of Representatives in 2018. His legislative work has included reforms to school funding, measures to improve access to mental health programmes and legislation capping insulin co-payments at $25 a month. For Democrats, the victory could offer a blueprint for competing in traditionally Republican territory. For the GOP, losing Texas, a state central to its electoral ambitions, represents a particularly alarming warning ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
