Dubai Airport (DBX) has a dedicated passport-renewal facility inside the premises. The airport officially confirms that UAE nationals can renew their passports at the Immigration Centre at Terminal 3, in the Arrivals area. It’s an important detail as the facility is not for every traveller. Dubai Airports specifically says that ONLY UAE nationals can use the passport-renewal service at DXB.Only for UAE nationalsThe service is linked to the UAE’s government immigration and citizenship infrastructure rather than being an ordinary airline service. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs–Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai) has also confirmed that passport-renewal requests are handled around the clock through its smart services and at the Customer Happiness Centre at Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 arrivals.Just 7-minutes procedureGDRFA-Dubai said in an earlier official update that its digital transformation had dramatically reduced the number of steps involved in passport and identity transactions. The department reported that passport-renewal times had been brought down from 35 minutes to seven minutes. It also said that passport and identity procedures had been reduced from 20 steps to a single step in its smart system. In other words, the traveller did not go through the traditional process like filling out forms, visiting a passport office, waiting for processing and then returning to collect the document. For an eligible UAE citizen, the airport facility is connected to government systems that can verify the person’s identity and citizenship electronically, process the renewal and produce the new travel document rapidly. The UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) describes passport renewal as a service for UAE citizens whose passports have expired or have less than one year remaining before expiry.A service not meant for all

The eight-minute experience does not mean that any passenger with an expired passport can walk into DXB and receive a new one before boarding. For a foreign visitor travelling through Dubai, an expired passport remains a serious travel problem. Airlines and immigration authorities still require passengers to hold the appropriate valid travel documents for their destination. So, if an Indian, British or American or other foreign national discovers an expired passport at DXB, they cannot simply use this Emirati passport-renewal facility. So, the traveller’s eight-minute renewal was not simply a lucky intervention by airport staff. It was possible because he was an Emirati citizen.Official sources: Dubai Airports – DXB FAQs · X, GDRFA-Dubai – Passport renewal service information · UAE ICP – Passport renewal service
