A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted pursuant to Supreme Court directions has concluded that a motorcycle insured by ICICI Lombard was allegedly “implanted” into a 2015 road accident case in Bongaigaon district.
The case involved an alleged collision between a motorcycle and a bicycle.
According to ICICI Lombard, it initiated a review of the claim after noticing discrepancies in documents related to the accident.
The insurer said records obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act showed that the registration number mentioned in the original Police General Diary Entry (GDE) differed from the one cited in the subsequent insurance claim.
Based on its findings, ICICI Lombard approached the Guwahati High Court, which referred the matter to the Assam SIT, constituted pursuant to directions of the Supreme Court in the case of Safiq Ahmad vs ICICI Lombard GIC Ltd.
According to the findings cited by the insurer, the SIT also found differences between the registration number recorded in the original General Diary Entry and that mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) filed later.
The SIT concluded that the insured motorcycle had allegedly been “implanted” into the accident case in an attempt to obtain compensation.
The case stresses the challenges insurers face in detecting suspected fraudulent claims, particularly in motor insurance, where investigations often involve verification of police records, accident documents and vehicle details.
In a statement, ICICI Lombard said it continues to strengthen its claims verification processes through data analytics, field investigations and internal controls while processing genuine claims.
