IAF face of Operation Sindoor Air Marshal Bharti retires

Air Marshal Awadesh Kumar Bharti, who was a key architect of the aerial aspect of Operation Sindoor, has retired after serving in the air force for 39 years. India had carried out Operation Sindoor in retribution to the Pahalgam terror attack. India struck multiple Pakistani air bases, radar sites, air defence weapons and terror strikes in this operation. Pakistan asked for a ceasefire soon after missile attacks carried out by the air force on May 10 last year.Commissioned into the Flying Branch in June 1987, he quickly established himself as a fighter pilot of rare calibre. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College and a Fighter Combat Leader, Bharti’s early trajectory included command responsibilities on the Su-30 fleet at a time when the aircraft was still being integrated into frontline service. His tenure as Flight Commander and later Commanding Officer of No. 30 Squadron coincided with the operationalisation of the Su-30MKI Phase III variant, a period marked by teething challenges but also by rapid tactical innovation. Under his leadership, the squadron not only made the new weapon systems combat-ready but also demonstrated their potential in major exercises such as Gagan Shakti, Indradhanush 2006 with the Royal Air Force, and Garuda 2007 with the French Air Force. His command earned him the Vayu Sena Medal.Air Marshal Bharti held key key operational appointments across air headquarters, strategic forces command and eastern air command. He has also commanded 2 Wing at Pune and subsequently held key appointments as senior air operations officer at central air command. Air Marshal Bharti gained national attention as Director General Air Operations during Operation Sindoor, where the IAF’s offensive-defensive employment of airpower marked a watershed in India’s military history. It was during this operation that the air force emerged as the sword-arm of Indian statecraft, demonstrating precision strike capability, offensive firepower and an integrated air defence network that redefined the national security calculus. Air Marshal Bharti was awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal for his central role in Operation Sindoor.Air Marshal Bharti took over as the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff soon after the conclusion of Operation Sindoor. He is a graduate of the 70th NDA Course and the 139th Pilot Course. His retirement marks the end of a distinguished career, but he has cemented his legacy in the operational doctrines and tactical innovations that continue to shape the IAF’s combat edge.
