IEX May Update | Electricity trade volume jumps 19% amid higher power consumption


Indian Energy Exchange Ltd (IEX) on Wednesday (June 3) reported an 18.6% year-on-year increase in electricity traded volume for May 2026 at 12,983 million units (MU), driven by higher energy consumption and record peak power demand in the country.

India’s energy consumption stood at 164.98 billion units (BU) during May 2026, up 11.5% from a year ago. Peak power demand touched an all-time high of 270.82 GW during the month.

In the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), buy bids rose 77% year-on-year, while sell bids increased 30%. The average market-clearing price in DAM stood at ₹4.88 per unit, up 18.3% year-on-year. The average market-clearing price in the Real-Time Market (RTM) came in at ₹4.16 per unit, rising 21.2% from a year ago.

The Day-Ahead Market, including HP-DAM, recorded traded volume of 4,417 MU in May 2026, compared with 3,535 MU in the corresponding month last year, marking a 24.9% increase. Real-Time Electricity Market volume rose to 5,529 MU in May 2026 from 4,770 MU a year ago, registering growth of 15.9%.

The Day Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market (TAM), including HP-TAM and comprising contingency, daily, weekly and monthly contracts of up to three months, traded 2,003 MU during the month.

IEX Green Market, which includes the Green Day-Ahead Market and Green Term-Ahead Market segments, recorded traded volume of 1,034 MU in May 2026 compared with 915 MU in May 2025, registering a 13% increase year-on-year. The weighted average price in the Green Day-Ahead Market stood at ₹3.60 per unit during May 2026, largely unchanged from a year ago.

A total of 6.10 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) were traded during May 2026, down 65% year-on-year. REC trading sessions were conducted on May 13 and May 29, with the clearing price at ₹400 per REC. Sell bids in the REC market declined 85.3% year-on-year, leading to an increase in clearing prices during May 2026.

Shares of Indian Energy Exchange Ltd ended at ₹123.20, down by ₹2.00, or 1.60%, on the BSE.
