Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded electricity trading volumes of 13,092 million units (MU), or 13.1 billion units (BU), in October 2026, up 16.5% from a year earlier.
India’s energy consumption rose 21.9% year-on-year to 159.8 BU during the month, according to government data cited by the exchange. Higher demand drove buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) up 265% year-on-year.
The average market clearing price in the DAM rose 149% to ₹6.66 per unit in October, from ₹2.67 per unit a year earlier. IEX attributed part of the sharp increase to the lower base in October 2025.
The Real-Time Market (RTM) clearing price also increased 112% year-on-year to ₹5.78 per unit.
IEX market segment performance
The Day-Ahead Market, including the High Price Day-Ahead Market (HP-DAM), recorded volumes of 4,508 MU, down 3.8% from 4,684 MU a year earlier.
Real-Time Market volumes, however, rose 23.7% to 5,670 MU from 4,583 MU in October 2025. Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market volumes increased 138.8% to 2,175 MU.
The Green Market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead and Green Term-Ahead Market segments, recorded volumes of 738 MU, down 30% year-on-year. The weighted average price in the Green Day-Ahead Market rose 67% to ₹4.13 per unit.
Renewable Energy Certificate trading nearly doubles
A total of 12.22 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) were traded on IEX in October, up 97.5% year-on-year.
The two trading sessions held during the month cleared at ₹338 and ₹330 per REC, respectively.
IEX said demand and supply conditions remained volatile during October. Warmer weather and below-normal monsoon rainfall supported demand in the first half of the month.
Cooler weather, rainfall and the impact of Cyclone Arnab eased demand later in the month. This led to near-zero prices in the Real-Time Market across multiple time blocks during periods of higher supply, the exchange said.
Shares of IEX closed 1.38% higher at ₹109 on the NSE on November 3.
