Is there a stock market settlement holiday for Eid-e-Milad today? Here’s what you need to know

Aegis Logistics shares volatile even as analyst positive post reports of UAE-based Tristar Group acquisition

Is there a stock market holiday today? That’s a question that may be on some minds today, as we usher in this public holiday on account of Eid-e-Milad.

The simple answer is no. The Indian stock market will operate as usual on Wednesday, August 26, despite the observance of Eid-e-Milad.

Both the Nifty 50 and Sensex will be available for regular equity trading. Therefore, investors can engage in buying and selling shares just as they would on any typical trading day.

But there is a catch: today, August 26, is a crucial day, as it is designated as a settlement holiday for the equity market. This indicates that while trading will proceed, the clearing and settlement of shares and funds will not occur on Wednesday.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A SETTLEMENT HOLIDAY?

A settlement holiday differs from a trading holiday. During a trading holiday, investors are unable to buy or sell shares on the exchange. However, on August 26, trading will proceed as normal.

The interruption only affects the settlement process. For instance, the proceeds or securities from eligible trades will not undergo the standard clearing and settlement process on Wednesday. The settlement cycle will recommence following the holiday.

CAN YOU TRADE TODAY?

Indeed, investors can trade today, but they must consider the settlement schedule. Shares acquired on August 25 and August 26 may be sold on August 27.

Likewise, investors should not presume that funds from a trade will be accessible for withdrawal right away just because the market is operational.

IS THE RUPEE MARKET OPEN?

Although the equity markets will be operational, the currency markets will be closed on August 26. Furthermore, the commodity exchange will continue its operations. MCX will be open for both its morning and evening sessions on Wednesday.

MARKETS TODAY

The markets are looking to maintain momentum, as the Nifty is trading relatively flat with gains of around 40 points, near the 24,350 mark. The Sensex is up 300 points. The Nifty Bank index is surging with gains of nearly 1% or over 400 points.
