The guidelines set out the process for transferring LPG connections, changing addresses and surrendering an LPG connection after obtaining a PNG connection.
Key LPG rules consumers should know:
- Inform your distributor before shifting: Consumers moving to a new home should notify their existing LPG distributor—whether Indane, HP Gas or Bharat Gas—and apply for a connection transfer. Documents such as identity proof, address proof, consumer card or gas book, and the original connection voucher may be required.
- Transfer within the same service area: If the new address falls under the same distributor’s service area, the process is relatively simple. The distributor updates the consumer’s address, allowing uninterrupted LPG cylinder deliveries.
- Transfer outside the distributor’s service area: Consumers relocating outside the existing distributor’s jurisdiction must obtain a Transfer Termination Voucher (TTV) from the current gas agency. This document, along with other required paperwork, must be submitted to the distributor in the new area to complete the transfer.
- Shifting to another city: Consumers moving to a different city must first return the LPG cylinder and regulator to their existing distributor. The agency will issue a termination voucher and refund the applicable security deposit. The new distributor will then issue a fresh connection after verifying the documents.
- New consumer number after transfer: Once the transfer is completed, the new distributor converts the TTV into a Transfer Subscription Voucher (TSV), issues a new consumer number and enables LPG refill bookings at the new address.
- PNG adoption gathers pace: More than 13.4 lakh new PNG connections have been installed across the country over the past six months. However, this represents only around 20% of the government’s target of providing 60 lakh new PNG connections, a goal announced earlier this year to strengthen domestic energy distribution.
Officials have advised consumers planning to switch from LPG to PNG to first check the eligibility criteria and documentation requirements with their local gas distributor. They also recommend preserving all transfer-related documents and vouchers to ensure a smooth transition. Industry experts note that while lower commercial LPG cylinder prices may provide some relief, effective implementation of these rules by local distributors will be crucial for a seamless consumer experience.
