The transition comes at a time when the new application is seeing rapid adoption across the country. UIDAI said the app has crossed 31 million downloads within less than five months of launch, reflecting growing usage of smartphone-based Aadhaar services.
According to the authority, nearly 40 lakh users have already updated their mobile numbers using the new Aadhaar App, while around 8.5 lakh people have used it for address updates.
The revamped application introduces several changes compared to the older mAadhaar platform. One of the biggest upgrades is the ability to update Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers and addresses directly through smartphones, reducing dependence on physical visits to Aadhaar centres for certain services.
The app also brings face authentication technology that allows users to verify identity digitally for proof of presence. UIDAI says the feature is aimed at enabling secure verification without repeatedly submitting physical Aadhaar copies.
Another major change is the introduction of QR-based Aadhaar sharing. Instead of handing over photocopies of Aadhaar cards, users can now digitally share only the required information through secure QR codes, a move designed to improve privacy and minimise unnecessary exposure of personal details.
The application additionally allows users to lock or unlock Aadhaar biometrics with a single click, download e-Aadhaar, check authentication history and book appointments online for Aadhaar Seva Kendras.
UIDAI is also positioning the app as a broader digital identity solution for day-to-day use cases. The authority said the platform can be used for hotel check-ins, hospital admissions, visitor management systems, event entries and verification of gig workers and service partners through Offline Verification Seeking Entity (OVSE) QR code scanning.
The older mAadhaar app had primarily focused on storing Aadhaar profiles and basic identity access. The new Aadhaar App, however, expands into digital verification and paperless identity management with stronger privacy controls.
The Aadhaar App is currently available on both Android and Apple iOS platforms as UIDAI gradually phases out the mAadhaar ecosystem in favour of the upgraded platform.
