US Markets | The S&P 500 rose 0.8% on Thursday as lower oil prices and fresh inflation data supported sentiment, while traders also assessed a fresh batch of corporate earnings. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1%, led by gains in Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Netflix. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 261 points, or 0.5%.
Crude oil | Brent crude futures fell 2% to $86.98 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures declined 2% to $81.14 a barrel, as traders weighed weaker oil demand amid the ongoing US-Iran war.
US Jobless Claims | The unemployment benefits increased last week, but the rise did little to alter the picture of a broadly stable labour market, with layoffs remaining at historically low levels. The US Labour Department said on Thursday that initial jobless claims rose by 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 209,000 for the week ended August 8, from a revised 200,000 in the previous week. The reading was slightly above economists’ expectations of around 205,000. The four-week moving average, which smooths out weekly volatility, was unchanged at 199,000.
Advance Retail Sales | The US is scheduled to release Advance Retail Sales month-on-month (MoM) data for July 2026 on Friday at 6:00 PM IST (8:30 PM SGT). The previous reading for June 2026 showed retail sales rising 0.2% MoM, following a revised 1% increase in May 2026.
Q1 Results | On Friday, companies scheduled to announce their results include Alkem Laboratories Ltd, Tube Investments of India Ltd, Ashok Leyland Ltd, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, Voltas, 3M India, Cochin Shipyard, Patanjali Foods, Physicswallah, Schneider Electric Infrastructure, Cholamandalam Financial Holdings, PTC Industries, Belrise Industries, Natco Pharma, Anupam Rasayan India, Jupiter Wagons, GMR Power and Urban Infra, Orchid Pharma, Saatvik Green Energy and Puravankara.
Economic Data | India is scheduled to release July Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation data on Friday (August 14) at 12:00 PM IST (2:30 PM SGT). The previous WPI inflation reading for June 2026 stood at 9.87% year-on-year, up from 9.68% in May 2026, according to the Office of the Economic Adviser.
Rare earth permanent magnets | The Ministry of Heavy Industries has received 20 bids from companies seeking to manufacture rare earth permanent magnets in India under a ₹7,280 crore government incentive programme. Larsen & Toubro, Coal India, 20 Microns and ReNew are among the companies that submitted bids through the Central Public Procurement portal.
