MRPL reports fire at Coker Hydrotreater Unit; stock falls 10% from day’s high


Shares of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) fell as much as 10% from the day’s high on Wednesday after a fire broke out at the company’s refinery facility near Jokatte in Mangaluru.

The stock had gained earlier to touch a day’s high of ₹180.75. However, it tumbled after reports of the incident emerged and touched an intraday low of ₹162.40 at 1:50 pm, down ₹18.35, or 10.15%, from the day’s high.

In a clarification issued later, MRPL said an incident involving the rupture of a Cold Separator operating at high pressure occurred in its Coker Hydrotreater Unit, resulting in a fire around noon.

The company said the battery limits of the affected unit have been isolated and its emergency response and firefighting teams were engaged in controlling the blaze. The fire has now been brought under control, although firefighting operations may continue for some time as part of the safe handling of the incident.

MRPL said no major injuries had been reported. One person suffered a minor injury and was shifted to hospital, where the individual is out of danger and receiving medical attention, the company said.

As per media reports, the incident had earlier triggered panic in nearby areas, with residents reporting a loud blast-like sound, strong vibrations and damage to doors and windows in some buildings.

Areas including Bajpe, Kalavaru, Baikampady, Jokatte, Surathkal and Katipalla reportedly felt the impact. A large plume of black smoke was also seen rising from the refinery premises.MRPL said the situation is being closely monitored, with the safety of personnel and the facility being given the highest priority. The company also said there was “absolutely no reason to panic” for people inside or outside its premises.
