Mumbai schools, colleges closed for afternoon session today as IMD issues red alert for heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall across the city on Saturday, July 4.In view of the weather conditions, all schools and colleges in Mumbai have been directed to remain closed for the afternoon session on July 4. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students.The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also appealed to residents to stay indoors and step out only if it is absolutely necessary.

Schools and colleges closed as precaution

According to the IMD, Mumbai is likely to receive intense rainfall along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph during the day.Earlier on Saturday, the city recorded 99 mm of average rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am. The eastern suburbs received 98 mm of rain, while the western suburbs recorded 94 mm.

High tide warning issued for Mumbai

The weather department has also warned of high tides, which may worsen waterlogging in low-lying areas. A high tide of 4.26 metres is expected at 2:50 pm on Saturday, followed by another high tide of 3.60 metres at 2:52 am on Sunday. Low tides are expected at 8:56 pm on Saturday and 8:22 am on Sunday.

Authorities advise residents to stay indoors

Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official weather updates. Students and parents are also advised to stay in touch with their respective schools and colleges for any further announcements regarding classes.
