Mutual Fund AUM: A major share of mutual fund investments in India comes from a handful of major cities. According to a Value Research report, citing Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data for September 2026, Mumbai alone accounts for 27.18 per cent of the country’s total mutual fund assets under management (AUM). This means that more than a quarter of India’s total mutual fund investments are concentrated in a single city.
Mumbai’s share is higher than the combined contribution of Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune. The national capital ranks second, accounting for around 16.3 per cent of India’s total mutual fund AUM. Bengaluru contributes 6.1 per cent, while Pune accounts for 4 per cent. Together, these three cities have a combined share of approximately 26.4 per cent, compared with Mumbai’s 27.18 per cent. This highlights Mumbai’s strong dominance in India’s mutual fund investment landscape.
Other cities also account for a significant share of mutual fund investments
Kolkata accounts for around 3.3 per cent of India’s total mutual fund AUM. Ahmedabad follows with a share of 2.8 per cent, while Chennai contributes approximately 2.7 per cent. Hyderabad accounts for 2.1 per cent of the total AUM. Meanwhile, Jaipur and Vadodara each have a share of around 0.9 per cent. These figures indicate that mutual fund investments have a significant presence across several major Indian cities. However, leading financial centres such as Mumbai and Delhi continue to account for a considerably larger share of the country’s total mutual fund AUM.
Top 10 cities account for over 66% of India’s Mutual Fund AUM
One of the key takeaways from the data is that India’s top 10 cities account for 66.24 per cent of the mutual fund industry’s total assets under management (AUM). This means nearly two-thirds of the country’s mutual fund investments are concentrated in just 10 cities. The remaining 33.76 per cent of the total AUM is spread across other cities in India.
The data highlights the uneven distribution of mutual fund investments across the country. Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune account for a significant share of the industry’s total AUM. However, nearly one-third of India’s total mutual fund AUM comes from outside the top 10 cities, indicating the presence of mutual fund investments in smaller cities and other regions as well.
