Dust and spray fill the air, debris is everywhere, and the men keep running towards higher ground.One of them is filming the whole thing.The terrifying footage was recorded amid the devastating floods and landslides along the Nepal-Tibet border. More than 150 people have reportedly died and hundreds remain missing as rescue teams continue searching through the affected areas.In the video, workers wearing helmets and bright orange safety vests can be seen scrambling away from the river. Then the flood hits.The man filming quickly turns and runs with the others as the torrent crashes through the area behind them.According to a translated caption he posted on Instagram, he was in serious trouble when the flood struck. He later said he was rescued by helicopter.He also shared another video showing the destruction left behind by the floods.The footage comes as rescue crews continue to pull survivors from areas hit by the sudden surge of water and mud. For some who made it out, the experience has been almost impossible to describe.
‘I saw my wife get buried in mud’
Keshav Prasad Baral, a 68-year-old survivor, told Reuters that he watched his wife get swept away when the mud entered their home.“It was a huge gush of mud coming straight towards us,” Baral said, describing how the mud kept rising as it moved closer.He tried to grab his wife’s hand and get her to the terrace. But she was swept away.Hours later, a helicopter arrived to rescue him.“My wife is still somewhere beneath the mud. She’s gone,” he said while being treated at a small hospital.
Mango tree miracle
Another survivor, Bibek Kumal, said he managed to escape by climbing into a mango tree.“I started running. Then a wall of water came thundering down as if it was an earthquake,” he told Reuters.For those caught in the disaster, there was barely any time to react. One moment they were going about their day. The next, they were running from a wall of water and mud.
