New ₹1,000 note with temple image? PIB Fact Check debunks viral claim

A purported ₹1,000 currency note featuring a temple image has been circulating on social media, with claims that the note has been issued or will enter circulation soon. The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has flagged the claim as fake, saying the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made no announcement about issuing a new ₹1,000 note.

In a post on X on October 27, PIB Fact Check said there had been no announcement from the central bank regarding the issuance of the currency note. It advised people to verify information through official sources and avoid sharing unverified claims.

The purported note, which has a yellowish appearance and a temple motif, has featured in images and videos shared on social media platforms. Some posts have claimed that it would be introduced into circulation on the 15th.

However, PIB Fact Check’s clarification does not support these claims.

What happened to the ₹1,000 note?

The ₹1,000 note was withdrawn from circulation as part of the demonetisation announced on November 8, 2016. The government withdrew the legal tender status of the old ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes at the time.

New ₹500 notes were subsequently introduced, while ₹2,000 notes were brought in as the highest-denomination banknotes in the new currency series. The RBI later announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes from circulation in May 2023, while allowing them to retain their legal tender status.

How to verify claims about new currency notes

The RBI’s official announcements and notifications are the appropriate sources for verifying claims about the introduction of new banknotes or changes to existing currency.

PIB Fact Check has also urged people to report suspicious content related to the Central government. Such claims can be reported by calling +91 8799711259 or emailing factcheck@pib.gov.in.
