Under the revised framework highlighted by EPFO, partial withdrawals have been grouped into three broad categories, essential needs, housing needs and special circumstances. The changes also specify how frequently members can avail advances for different purposes.
What has changed in EPF advance rules?
For essential needs, which include illness, education and marriage, EPFO has specified separate withdrawal limits. Members can take an advance for medical treatment without a specified limit on the number of withdrawals.
For education-related expenses, EPF advances can be taken up to 10 times during the membership period. For marriage-related expenses, the limit is five times.
Housing-related withdrawals have also been brought under a common category. These include requirements such as purchase of a house, flat or plot, construction of a house, repayment of a housing loan and repairs or renovation. Members can make housing-related advances up to five times.
EPFO has also retained a separate provision for certain special circumstances, under which an advance can be availed up to twice in a financial year, subject to the applicable conditions.
How much can an EPF member withdraw?
EPFO’s latest communication says members can avail an advance of up to 75% of their EPF balance, subject to the applicable conditions for the particular category.
The framework also provides for a minimum 12-month EPF membership period for availing these advances, according to EPFO’s latest guidance. The withdrawal is an advance from the EPF account and is therefore different from a final settlement of the PF balance after leaving employment.
Why the change matters
The revised structure makes it easier for EPF members to understand the circumstances under which they can access their retirement savings and the number of times an advance can be sought.
The changes are particularly relevant for members who may need to use part of their EPF savings for recurring requirements such as education or medical treatment, or for housing-related expenses.
EPFO has been communicating the revised withdrawal framework through its official social media channels.
