Paisabazaar, known until now for credit cards and loans, is expanding into mutual fund (MF) distribution. Gupta said the company’s management has not set fixed numerical targets for SIP volumes or assets under management. Instead, the near-term goal is a working digital process that lets customers invest, track and review their portfolios through the app.
The entry point is Paisabazaar’s existing user base of six crore customers, most of whom currently use the app for credit cards, credit bureau scores and bill payments. Gupta said the plan is to also expand beyond this base to new users over time.
A large share of Paisabazaar’s existing customers are self-employed professionals with an annual income under ₹10 lakh, according to Gupta. This group typically does not have access to a bank relationship manager or an offline distributor to guide investment decisions. “It is definitely aimed at self-employed professionals. It is aimed at people who might not have a big corpus of investable surplus,” Gupta said, describing the target segment for the new mutual fund offering.
To address the cash flow pattern of this segment, Paisabazaar has introduced a daily SIP option. Unlike salaried employees who receive income on a fixed date each month, self-employed customers often have variable income. A daily SIP lets a customer invest in smaller amounts more frequently and pause contributions when cash flow drops. Gupta said the company has worked with asset management companies (AMCs) to bring the entry ticket size for daily SIPs down to ₹10, compared with the ₹500 minimum common for monthly SIPs.
“At our platform, as of now, we have a daily SIP proposition available for 900-odd schemes,” Gupta said, contrasting this with other platforms that typically offer daily SIPs on 8 to 20 schemes.
Paisabazaar plans to build investment journeys tailored to specific customer needs, such as retirement planning or goal-based investing, rather than a single generic product flow. For the full interview, watch the accompanying video
