Policy decision at 10 am today; rate hike in focus

RBI MPC Meeting October 2026 Live Updates: Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra to announce MPC policy decision today, with a potential repo rate hike amid rising inflation pressures.

RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee Meeting October 2026 Live Updates: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is set to announce its bi-monthly monetary policy decision at 10 am on Wednesday (October 7), with the focus on whether the central bank will raise the repo rate for the first time in more than three years.

Governor Sanjay Malhotra will announce the decision after the conclusion of the three-day meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

A majority of participants in a PTI poll expect the RBI to raise the repo rate by 25 basis points and maintain a hawkish tone, although views remain divided on whether the central bank will also change its policy stance.

The RBI’s policy repo rate currently stands at 5.25%. The last repo rate hike came in February 2023, when the central bank raised it by 25 basis points to 6.50%.

A rate hike today would mark a reversal after the RBI cut the repo rate by a cumulative 125 basis points in 2025 and subsequently maintained a prolonged pause.

Inflation will remain a key focus of the policy review. India’s retail inflation rose to 4.82% in August from 4.45% in July. The government has mandated the RBI to keep CPI-based retail inflation at 4%, with a tolerance band of 2% on either side.

The prospect of a rate hike comes amid rising inflation pressures linked to the continuing West Asia conflict.
