Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make first joint UK appearance, but their return is far from simple

Their Nottingham visit also showed how much their roles have changed. They are no longer working members of the royal family, and their engagements now centre on the causes and organisations they choose to support.

There was no grand royal welcome, but there was plenty of affection from some of the people who came out to see them.

One well-wisher, Robin Warrener, who had also attended their 2017 visit, said he was pleased to see them back and felt they received too much negative coverage.

That mix of support and criticism has followed Harry and Meghan for years. Public opinion remains divided, and a single appearance is unlikely to change that.

Still, returning to a city that played a part in their early relationship gave the visit a personal touch. They were once newly engaged, beginning their life together under the royal spotlight. Today, they are navigating a very different chapter, with their own family and priorities to consider.

Their appearance in Nottingham wasn’t a dramatic statement about their relationship or their future. It was simply a chance to return to a familiar place, reconnect with people they have supported and show up together again.

And sometimes, after years of public scrutiny and difficult family decisions, simply being able to do that is enough to get people talking.
