Rajkumar Hirani confirms ‘3 Idiots’ sequel casting ‘will be the same’, reveals story is set 20 years later: ‘It’s not about the students’

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has finally shared an update on the much-discussed sequel to his 2009 blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’. While confirming that the script is currently being written, Hirani made it clear that the project is still some distance away from an official announcement. The filmmaker also revealed that the casting for the potential sequel “will be the same” and clarified that the story will not revisit the protagonists’ college years.

Rajkumar Hirani says ‘3 Idiots’ sequel script is still being written

Speaking to ANI, Rajkumar Hirani revealed that he and his writing team are still working on the story. The filmmaker said he would prefer to wait until the script reaches the right stage before making any formal announcement.“Kahani likhi jaa rahi hai (story is being written); we are still writing. Once it reaches the right point, then we will talk about it. Abhi toh (right now) we are still writing. Casting will be the same,” he said. His comments indicate that Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi could potentially return as Rancho, Farhan and Raju, respectively, should the sequel eventually move forward. However, Hirani’s comments suggest that the film is not officially greenlit yet.

How did the idea for the ‘3 Idiots’ sequel come about?

Interestingly, Hirani revealed that the sequel was not conceived as a continuation of ‘3 Idiots’ from the outset. Instead, the idea emerged while he and his team were developing an entirely different story.Explaining how the concept took shape, Hirani said, “Abhi jo likh raha hoon voh bhi nahi socha ki sequel ke hisaab se likh raha hoon. Hum koi aur kahani likh rahe the phir aisa laga ki jo likh di hai voh iss second part par fit ho jayegi (Even what I am writing now, I had not thought of it as a sequel. We were writing another story, and then it felt like the story we had written would fit into this second part).”The director’s comments suggest that, much like some of his earlier franchise decisions, the story itself will determine whether the sequel takes shape.

Hirani also offered an important glimpse into the potential timeline of the sequel. He clarified that the story will not be about Rancho, Farhan and Raju as college students.“It’s not about the students; it’s about 20 years later ab kya hota hai unki life main (It’s not about the students; it’s about what happens in their lives 20 years later),” he said. The revelation sets up a significant departure from the original film, which followed the three friends during their engineering college years and explored their friendship, ambitions and struggles within an intensely competitive education system. If the sequel materialises, it would instead explore how their lives have evolved two decades later.

Hirani says ‘3 Idiots’ sequel will happen only if the story works

Despite the excitement surrounding a possible reunion of the original cast, Hirani remains cautious about the project. The filmmaker stressed that he does not want to make a sequel merely because the first film was successful. For Hirani, the script has to reach a point where the team is convinced that the story deserves to be told. This approach has been central to his franchise decisions in the past, and he drew parallels with the making of ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’.

Rajkumar Hirani recalls how ‘Munna Bhai’ sequel happened

Reflecting on ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’ and its sequel ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’, Hirani revealed that the second film was also not originally planned.“Munna Bhai ka bhi jab sequel banaya tha, voh koi intention nahi tha banaen ka. Agar aap uss waqt ko yaad kare toh uss time par belief was that sequels don’t work. Pehle jitne sequels bane the kabhi nahi chale (When I made the sequel to Munna Bhai as well, there was no intention of making one initially. If you remember that time, the belief was that the belief was that sequels don’t work. The sequels that had been made earlier had never worked),” he said.Hirani explained that audiences do not necessarily return to theatres simply because a film is being presented as a sequel. According to him, the story has to provide a compelling reason to revisit familiar characters. He said the idea for ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ similarly emerged while the team was developing another story and eventually realised that it could work with the characters from ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’.
