The companies said they will explore setting up a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India that would serve as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technology.
The proposed partnership will combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced aircraft engines with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing and execution capabilities. The companies said the initiative aims to establish an end-to-end Indian capability covering engine design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support.
The announcement comes as India seeks to reduce its dependence on imported defence technology and build domestic capabilities in critical aerospace systems.
Reliance Industries, Rolls-Royce to explore Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex
Under the proposed partnership, Reliance and Rolls-Royce will explore opportunities to jointly develop and manufacture the AMCA engine in India.
The Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex is expected to bring together capabilities across the propulsion value chain and could also support wider opportunities in defence, civil aerospace and new power and propulsion technologies, the companies said.
Anant Ambani, Executive Director, Reliance Industries, said strategic autonomy requires sovereign capabilities in critical technologies. He said the partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing scale and execution capabilities.
“Together, we aim to build an enduring national capability that can make India self-reliant and, over time, globally competitive in advanced propulsion technologies. This is our contribution to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Viksit Bharat,” he added.
The proposed venture is aimed at building an indigenous aerospace engine ecosystem that can eventually compete globally in advanced propulsion technologies.
Rolls-Royce brings engine expertise to India’s AMCA push
Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç said the company would bring its advanced engineering and engine expertise to the partnership, alongside Reliance’s industrial capabilities in India.
“I welcome the opportunity to join forces with Reliance Industries, bringing together our century-long heritage in advanced engineering and proven engine expertise with their homegrown leadership in Indian industry. Together, with our existing partnerships and capabilities in India, this marks a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country,” the Rolls-Royce CEO said.
The companies said the proposed alliance would support the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat push for technology indigenisation and strengthen India’s position in advanced propulsion.
The AMCA is India’s planned fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme. An indigenous engine is a critical component of the programme, given the strategic importance of fighter aircraft propulsion and India’s long-standing dependence on foreign engine technology.
