Sensex jumps 639 points, Nifty reclaims 24,100 as Reliance Industries, Sun Pharma lead rebound

The equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty closed higher on Monday (April 27), snapping a three-session losing streak, with gains led by Reliance Industries, Sun Pharma, Mahindra & Mahindra and Infosys, as buying strength lifted all sectoral indices and market breadth remained firmly positive.

The Sensex rose 639 points to close at 77,304, while the Nifty advanced 195 points to settle at 24,093, ending near the 24,100 mark. The rebound was broad-based, with 23 of the 30 Sensex constituents closing in the green.

The Nifty Bank gained 175 points to end at 56,264, while the Nifty Midcap index outperformed, rising 874 points to 60,248. Market breadth remained strong, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 4:1 in favour of advancing stocks.

From the Sensex basket, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Jio Financial Services Ltd, Wipro Ltd, SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd, Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd and Tech Mahindra Ltd were the major gainers. Shriram Finance Ltd, Axis Bank Ltd, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Tata Consumer Products Ltd, ICICI Bank Ltd and Trent Ltd were the biggest laggards.

All sectoral indices ended higher, with the Nifty Pharma and Healthcare indices leading gains among sectors. Sun Pharma emerged as the top gainer on the Nifty, climbing 7% after its Organon acquisition announcement. Reliance Industries rose 3% after reporting steady fourth-quarter results.

Among midcaps, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services was the top gainer, rising nearly 8% after strong fourth-quarter earnings. One Mobikwik Systems gained over 11% after the company received Reserve Bank of India approval for an NBFC licence.

Cohance Life Sciences hit the 20% upper circuit after the company named Umang Vohra as Executive Chairman and Group CEO. Air-conditioner makers gained after the India Meteorological Department issued a heatwave alert, with Blue Star rising over 5%.

On the downside, Shriram Finance and Axis Bank were among the top Nifty losers, falling nearly 3% each after their fourth-quarter results. Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India fell over 8% from the day’s highs after weak fourth-quarter earnings.
