Sensex, Nifty snap two-day winning streak as late selloff erases early gains


The equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty erased opening gains and ended largely lower on Tuesday (May 26), snapping a two-day winning streak amid weakness in heavyweight stocks including Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, Trent and Bharti Airtel.

The Sensex declined 479 points to close at 76,010, while the Nifty fell 118 points to settle at 23,914, slipping below the 23,950 mark. The Nifty Bank index dropped 201 points to 55,093.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with the Midcap index rising 332 points to 62,299. Market breadth remained neutral, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 1:1. Among sectoral indices, Nifty Metal emerged as the top gainer, led by gains of over 2% in Hindustan Zinc.

From the Sensex basket, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd, Nestle India Ltd, Tech Mahindra Ltd, Bajaj Auto Ltd, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd were the major gainers.

Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Trent Ltd, Wipro Ltd, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd were the biggest laggards.

In stock-specific action, Astra Microwave Products fell 7% after reporting weak fourth-quarter results. The company’s net profit declined 10% year-on-year to ₹259.3 crore.

Exide Industriesdropped 5% as its Q4 net profit fell 60% year-on-year to ₹188 crore. On the gaining side, KPIT Technologies jumped 12% after reporting a surge in fourth-quarter net profit along with margin expansion. Tata Technologies rose 10% after posting healthy Q4 earnings. The company reported a 44.4% year-on-year rise in net profit to ₹106 crore.

Meanwhile, Tata Communications declined nearly 4% amid profit booking despite reporting strong fourth-quarter results. Among other gainers in the broader market, Indraprastha Gas Ltd, Tata Communications, Indraprastha Gas Ltd, Tata Communications and Indraprastha Gas Ltd ended higher.
