Restrictions on silver imports are a temporary measure and there is currently no consideration of imposing an import quota on gold, government sources said on Tuesday (September 29).
The government is also looking to address a 9% duty arbitrage in the precious metals market, according to the sources.
India had tightened silver import rules earlier this year, bringing certain silver products under the restricted import category and requiring prior authorisation from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
The government had also raised the import duty on gold and silver from 6% to 15% with effect from May 13.
