Tech jobs shrinking because of AI but chip factories are creating new manufacturing roles

The American labour market posted a surge in hiring this August, as per the fresh data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It also reveals a difference across industries as technology positions retreat due to the artificial intelligence (AI) boom while hardware fabrication gains ground due to chip manufacturing. Domestic employers expanded their payrolls by 162,000 workers last month, blowing past market projections of just 53,000 additions. Citing data, The New York Post reported that the nationwide unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%.According to the data, past employment figures also saw sharp positive adjustments. Revised tallies indicate July actually added 21,000 jobs rather than dropping 23,000, while June figures were lifted by 11,000 to reach 31,000 net positions. Meanwhile, the labor participation rate ticked upward by 0.1% following months of steady erosion, though it remains down 0.5% compared to January levels.

Tech jobs contract as manufacturing roles rebound

The report outlined contrasting fortunes across different segments of the economy. White-collar professions faced headwinds as the information sector, which feels direct operational pressure from fast-moving AI automation, eliminated 23,000 positions in August. In contrast, industrial manufacturing signaled a rebound by adding 16,000 roles, bouncing back from a multi-month trough recorded in December 2025. This appears to be supported by large-scale construction and production at semiconductor manufacturing plants tied directly to AI infrastructure.Hospitality and leisure generated the strongest single-category surge by adding 62,000 roles after two straight months of shrinkage. Municipal public school employment recovered 42,000 positions following midsummer vacation distortions, though the sector has remained largely stagnant since January 2025.

Markets and federal policy friction

Following the strong payroll release, the yield on 10-year US Treasury notes climbed to 4.772%, stirring trader speculation that the Federal Reserve will prioritise fighting inflation and could potentially hike borrowing costs this month, the report said. The data drew swift commentary from President Donald Trump, who took to Truth Social to applaud the hiring surge while demanding the central bank slash borrowing costs.“Great jobs number just announced, breaking all estimates (except mine!) by double and triple – And you haven’t seen anything yet! EMPLOYERS ADDED 162,000 JOB IN AUGUST. Lower the interest rates because the USA is a much stronger credit than it was just a short time ago! A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE – IT’S A BETTER CREDIT…Very simple!”“We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World, like “the old days.” Without the United States agreeing to allow them their big surpluses, and we could stop that immediately, they would no longer be considered financially ELITE! LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT, which the U.S. Supreme Court, in its ridiculous and very costly Tariff decision, strongly acknowledged “the President” has an absolute right to do.
