Tesla Q3 Earnings: One standout for the quarter was Tesla’s USD 1.5 billion in free cash flow, a measure of cash generated after subtracting investments needed to keep the business running.

Highlights

  • Tesla quarterly profit declines 44 per cent year-on-year.
  • Free cash flow surprises analysts despite higher spending.
  • Elon Musk confirms discussions over potential SpaceX merger.

Tesla Q3 Results 2026: Tesla reported a 44 per cent decline in its third-quarter net profit to USD 787 million, even as strong free cash flow surprised Wall Street analysts. The Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker posted largely flat revenue of USD 28 billion for the quarter ended September 2026, while discussions surrounding a potential merger with SpaceX added another dimension to the company’s financial outlook.

According to a report by AP, Tesla’s quarterly earnings presented a mixed picture for investors, with falling profits offset by stronger-than-expected cash generation. The company reported earnings of 22 cents per share, while adjusted earnings per share stood at 48 cents, exceeding Wall Street expectations by 3 cents.

Tesla Q3 results: Profit falls 44%, revenue remains flat

Tesla’s net income declined to USD 787 million during the July-September quarter, down 44 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year.

Revenue remained largely unchanged at USD 28 billion, marginally below analysts’ estimates.

However, the company’s free cash flow emerged as a major highlight, reaching USD 1.5 billion during the quarter. Free cash flow measures the cash remaining after a company accounts for capital expenditure required to maintain and expand its operations.

Analysts had anticipated negative free cash flow amid Tesla’s substantial investments in artificial intelligence and other long-term projects.

“It seems Tesla is taking a more capital-efficient approach, delaying longer-term projects to be able to self-fund their AI growth,” said Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein, describing the stronger cash generation as the quarter’s biggest surprise.

Tesla-SpaceX merger: What did Elon Musk say?

Speculation surrounding a possible merger between Tesla and SpaceX gained momentum after Musk acknowledged discussions about combining the two companies.

During a SpaceX earnings conference call on Tuesday, Musk indicated that a long-discussed merger with Tesla could be under consideration.

He said special committees had been established at both companies to evaluate a potential combination, although several obstacles remained before any transaction could proceed.

However, Musk declined to elaborate on the possible merger during Tesla’s subsequent earnings conference call.

The development comes as Tesla expands its focus beyond electric vehicles into artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technologies.

Tesla share price: Stock declines in after-hours trading

Tesla shares declined 2.4 per cent in after-hours trading following the earnings announcement.

The decline came after the stock had gained 3.6 per cent during the regular trading session.

Investors were assessing the company’s weaker quarterly profit, stronger cash flow, higher capital expenditure and the potential implications of a merger with SpaceX.

Tesla’s self-driving software sees strong demand

Tesla also reported robust demand for its driver-assistance technology, which customers can purchase through a separate subscription.

According to the company, 75 per cent of vehicles sold in North America included a subscription to its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software.

The system assists drivers with certain driving functions but does not make Tesla vehicles fully autonomous. Drivers must remain attentive and be prepared to take control whenever necessary.

Tesla added the term “Supervised” to the product’s name following regulatory concerns that the earlier terminology could mislead consumers about the technology’s capabilities.

Tesla profit margins improve despite discount concerns

Despite concerns that vehicle discounts could put pressure on profitability, Tesla reported an improvement in its automotive profit margins.

The company’s automotive margin stood at 18.1 per cent during the September quarter, representing an increase of nearly 3 percentage points from the corresponding period last year.

This means Tesla generated approximately 18.1 cents in automotive gross profit for every dollar of vehicle sales.

The improvement came despite pricing pressures in the electric vehicle market.

Tesla had previously reported deliveries of nearly 490,000 vehicles during the quarter, an increase compared with the preceding three months.

The recovery followed an extended period of declining sales, amid criticism of Musk’s political involvement and support for US President Donald Trump and right-wing political figures in Europe.

Tesla cuts 2026 capital spending forecast to USD 20 billion

Tesla’s capital expenditure doubled to USD 4.7 billion in the third quarter as the company continued investing in artificial intelligence and other projects.

However, during its earnings conference call, Tesla lowered its full-year capital spending estimate to USD 20 billion from the earlier projection of USD 25 billion.

The company also disclosed that it had secured USD 30 billion in borrowing capacity to support potential large-scale investments.

Tesla indicated that it was unlikely to draw on the borrowing facility during the current calendar year.
