UK to charge universities $1,200 per international student: How the new levy could affect Indian applicants

The UK will introduce an annual £925 levy, approximately $1,200, on international students enrolled at universities in England from August 2028, applying to enrolments exceeding 220 students per institution. The policy is projected to generate £445 million in its first year. Although universities will pay the charge, overseas applicants, including students from India, could face higher tuition fees if institutions pass on the additional costs. University leaders have questioned the policy amid financial pressures and declining international recruitment.
